Bumbelina Falloverly

Bumbelina Falloverly, originally uploaded by matyldam.

Odd title, interesting story. While Katie and I were both learning to ride, we had a tendency to drop our motorcycles. Kind of frequently. Katie’s Triumph Speedmaster is yellow and black, so she christened her bike, Bumbelina Falloverly.

The canvas is my usual 8×8”, and the medium is acrylics and ink.

Today (3/21/2008) is Katie’s birthday, so I’d like to wish her all the best (beer, boys, and bees), and thank her for sticking by me through thick and thin, upright and falloverly.

Deep Blue Identity

GUx26zy3M6swipjsZfd3PB6q_500.jpg

Slowly taking shape. Surprisingly this was my first time working with European paper dimensions, despite the fact I’ve previously worked with companies across the pond. The card had a minimal amount of content on it which left a lot more room for some nice design elements.

Open Wide and Say Aahh

GUx26zy3M6hftt87rlGvDOuD_r1_500.jpg

Website design for a high-end cosmetic dentistry office. Very soothing and relaxing — no pictures of teeth or apples. It’s funny how I hated gradients for so long, and now they’re my best friends. And it’s probably time to stop using that reflection effect, but I’m not ready to take a stand. Logo was also a custom design.

Deep Blue

GUx26zy3M662qp3fMUItbWQg_r2_500.jpg

Lovely nautical logo for Deep Blue, a UK-based public relations firm serving the fishing industry across the pond. Design guidelines were straightforward: “no ship steering wheels or fish with top hats”.

Chocolicious

GUx26zy3M64zo16s0MxBiiNu_500.jpg

Here is a preliminary design for a store selling custom chocolates. Anyone familiar with my work knows this is quite a departure for me, stylistically (where’s the grid? where are the hard edges? centered text!), but I still managed to sneak some Helvetica Neue in there.

Still Life #34

Still Life #34, originally uploaded by matyldam.

This one is yet another masterwork in the ‘birthday’ series. This one is for Steve, and was inspired by his bread and butter: Jäger and cigarettes. I’ve moved to an 8×8” format, and have really begun to like the still life genre. This new size gives me a little more room to work than the previous 6×6” canvases, but it still maintains the intimate feel of this smaller format. With this piece I’m also further exploring the use of pen and ink combined with acrylics on canvas. Happy birthday General Mayelaze.

Haire's Famous Canned Lutefisk

Haire’s Famous Canned Lutefisk, originally uploaded by matyldam.

6×6" acrylics and ink on canvas. For those who don’t know, lutefisk is a Scandinavian dish comprised of air-dried cod soaked in lye. For those who don’t know what lye is, wikipedia says: Lye is a caustic chemical which is leached from hard wood ashes and is used for glass making, soap making, textile production, biodiesel fuel, food preparation, drain openers, and oven cleaners.

That’s right, nothing says “Swedish culinary delight” and “night of projectile vomiting” like biodiesel fuel and oven cleaners. Happy Birthday Toby!

Sitemind.com Site

GUx26zy3M3xfw2epFTZx5oJc_500.jpg

Sitemind’s new website. The theme was ‘back to basics’, so the imagery is loosely based on the idea of the basic elements. There’s a button that allows the user to participate in the site by changing the elements to suit their fancy. New version coming later this year.

Sitemind Business Card

GUx26zy3M3xfvmjdgfMapEJ9_r2_500.jpg

Sitemind’s new identity created by yours truly. Rounded corners were a must, and it was nice to be able to design for both sides of the card.

Sitemind Logo

GUx26zy3M3xfv8mnSWdqjo6J_500.jpg

New company, new logo. I loved playing with a glass-like translucent effect with the icon, and Avenir is such a clean, friendly, modern typeface (thanks Toby!).

Lady Crysis Promo

GUx26zy3M3xfupfa9pYAVdzn_500.jpg

Lady Crysis is a DJ with a zombie fetish, so this design was sort of a clean, stylized approach to the traditional zombie imagery.

SaveTheChimps.org Identity

GUx26zy3M3xfu7d5CFbJeeV9_500.jpg

SaveTheChimps.org is a really great organization which serves as a sanctuary for hundreds of chimpanzees previously used in the NASA space program, and medical testing.
